Marist Sisters College has been recognized as one of Australia’s 5-Star Innovative Schools for 2024, a distinction that reflects its commitment to fostering innovation and achieving outstanding student outcomes. In a recent interview with The Educator TV, Melissa Carson, Leader of Professional Identity and Learning, gave an in depth look into the vision and practices behind the college’s success.
Carson attributed the college’s success to its strong culture of trust and collaboration, emphasizing how staff feel supported and involved in the innovation process. “Our staff know that any innovation we pursue is research-based, carefully considered, and focused on successful outcomes for our students, who remain our primary concern,” she said. She also noted how the leadership team ensures that every voice is valued, creating a shared commitment to growth and improvement.
The college’s Compass for Life framework, which focuses on wellbeing, faith formation, and professional learning, serves as the foundation for its day-to-day operations. “The compass for life is a lived experience,” Carson explained. “It’s the basis of three frameworks—wellbeing and learning, faith formation, and professional learning—and it guides all of our actions. It’s about building relationships, empowering one another, and demonstrating courage, even when it’s difficult.”
One of the college’s standout initiatives is its Early Career Teacher Program, which has supported 26 new educators since 2023. Carson highlighted the tailored approach of the program, saying, “We guide early career teachers through basic orientation to the school, support their wellbeing, and help them develop their professional identity. In the second phase, we pair them with middle leader mentors who focus on subject-specific knowledge to enhance their teaching.”
Summing up the college’s approach, Carson said, “It’s about empowering our staff and students to grow, innovate, and achieve their full potential in a supportive and collaborative environment.”
