Oakleigh State School
Last year, a whole of school event was held as a ‘sTEAM Showcase' with every child at Oakleigh State School showcasing their inquiry led learning. The event included local Secondary schools and other partners who have worked with the school as part of its Young Innovator Program. This has now become a biennial event with the school’s P&C working alongside staff and students to place a focus on student driven learning. A highlight of the STEAM work has been the creation of Design@Oakleigh which supports the thinking necessary for both teachers and students to work through a design/inquiry cycle. Ongoing work includes the creation of digital scaffolds to support this work and the leveraging of digital portfolios to enable students to make their thinking visible right through the process. To date, the Young Innovator Program has catered for approximately 1,500 participants over four years and owes its success to the ongoing support of the school’s partners including external providers, parents, ex-students and teachers.
