Jacinta Allan has been elected unopposed as the new Premier of Victoria, following a two-hour caucus meeting.
Allan, who was Deputy Premier until Tuesday’s sudden resignation of Daniel Andrews, becomes the second female premier in Victoria's history, after the late Joan Kirner.
Speaking to media outside parliament on Wednesday, Allan said she will “follow the footsteps” of Dan Andrews, calling the role “such a deep honour and privilege”.
“There's been lots written in just the last 24 hours about Daniel and Daniel Andrews's leadership, his strength, his courage, his determination,” Allan said. said.
“He's been driven by his values every single day he has served the Victorian community.”
Allan said her tenure as Premier begins “with the opportunity to continue the strong reform agenda and also chart a future course for the state”.
“In coming days and weeks, I will have more to say about policy priorities that I will be bringing.”
Parliament returns on October 3.
