In 1924, Strathcona Girls Grammar School opened its doors with a humble enrolment of 17 students. Back then, the school’s founding Principals, Florence Livingstone and Henrietta Hughes no doubt had a vision for Strathcona’s future success, and a century on, that vision is being realised.
In March, Strathcona Girls Grammar celebrated its centenary year, marking 100 years of the school developing intellectually curious, optimistic, and life-ready young women.
Today, Strathcona is one of Melbourne’s leading all-girls' schools, delivering a culture of academic excellence and a rich selection of co-curricular activities that allow girls to grow and thrive.
“Celebrating Strathcona Girls Grammar's Centenary is an opportunity to reflect on our rich history,” Strathcona Girls Grammar Principal, Lorna Beegan told The Educator.
“Over the past 100 years, our focus on academic excellence and holistic development has remained steadfast, while our school motto, ‘fortiter fideliter, feliciter’ – bravely, faithfully, and happily - continues to underpin the heart of our educational ethos.”
‘Inspiring a future where the potential of women knows no bounds’
Looking ahead, Beegan said one of the school’s ‘guiding questions’ is how it can “inspire a future where the potential of women knows no bounds”.
“We’re ensuring our students are equipped to navigate the challenges of today, tomorrow, and beyond, emerging as leaders and innovators,” she said.
“While we continue to support students in achieving consistently high academic results, we will also nurture their whole being, offering diverse pathways and personalised opportunities tailored to each student’s unique interests and talents.”
Beegan said the school is redefining how excellence looks and feels.
“This month, we unveil our new Early Years precinct and launch our Floresco Philosophy. We’re excited to enhance the learning journey for our community's youngest and newest members as ‘Unstoppable Starts Here.’”
