Bond University, Robina, QLD
Project: Environmental Sustainability & Medicine
The Bond Medical Program has begun integrating environmental sustainability across the school’s curriculum. The integration starts in Year 1 with a general introduction to the concept of sustainability involving people, the planet, and the environmental footprint of healthcare, and ending in Year 5 with students exploring ways of reducing their footprint in terms of everyday items.
Planetary health is the focus in Year 2, with students tasked to participate in a series of activities, including an assignment and a small conference. The assignment requires the use of Sustainable Development Goal 13 (climate action), plus one other SDG, to identify a problem and propose a product to address the problem. The best products from this assignment will be featured at the conference, to vie for the People’s Choice Awards.
The university also introduced “green points” into the MD Program where students can work for local organisations such as Bushcare and Beachcare as a way of offsetting their environmental footprint.
