Research Officer
Rising in the field of liver research, Dr Hui Emma Zhang has been contributing significantly to a mouse model that recapitulates the human liver cancer and could potentially lead to a novel, much-needed therapy to combat the dreaded disease. The third leading cause of cancer-related deaths worldwide, liver cancer can only be treated by two medications that offer little hope of improving survival. Dr Zhang aims to change that. Her research, which received a total $70,000 funding from the Perpetual Philanthropy Foundation and University of Sydney in 2019, has appeared in over 20 science journals and opened opportunities for her to present in over two dozen international and national conferences. In 2018, she spoke about liver cancer at the annual Australian conference on gastroenterology. A 10-year veteran in the field of medical research, Dr Zhang is confident that she will soon better understand liver cancer to be able to develop a potent therapy for it.
