Robyn Owens has been appointed as a 2020 Fellow of the Australian Academy of Science, which recognises the nation’s most distinguished scientists for their ground-breaking research and contributions that have had substantial impact to advance knowledge. In addition to her research contributions, Owens was until recently UWA’s deputy vice-chancellor for research and was well-regarded for her leadership contributions. Owens’ area of study focuses on understanding how humans process images and how machines might assist humans where the human eye has visual limitations. Her work has broad application and is used in areas such as helping understand how breastmilk is produced in lactating mothers, understanding complex human behaviour, and in developing complex systems such facial recognition systems.
