Duncan Maskell, UNIVERSITY OF MELBOURNE
Vice-chancellor
University of Melbourne
The University of Melbourne’s new freedom of speech policy was developed under the leadership of Duncan Maskell, to align with and supplement the institution’s long-standing policy on academic freedom. It was endorsed by the university’s council to promote “critical and free enquiry, informed intellectual discourse and public debate within the university and in the wider society”. Maskell ensured that the policy makes explicit the commitment to lawful freedom of speech in its activities and operations and to safeguard students, staff and invited visitors on the campuses.
