Free webinars ready youth for STEM careers

Charles Sturt University’s (CSU) Wangaratta Regional Study Centre has collaborated with the Victorian Department of Environment, Land, Water and Planning to launch a series of free webinars designed to give secondary students a greater understanding of STEM careers.

As part of the 2020 Regional Youth Science Forum, the five-episode Youth Science Webinars highlight the role STEM plays on various local, national and global issues, and prepare students on future careers in the field.

The sessions are held every Wednesday from 4:30pm to 5:30pm and open to secondary students from any state or territory who are interested in STEM as a career option.

Lucy Bett of CSU’s Division of Student Services said the webinars were geared at providing students a deeper appreciation of STEM careers.

“Charles Sturt University is honoured to be involved in this partnership to continue to grow the areas of science, technology, engineering, and maths,” she said.

“This is an opportunity for secondary students to learn more about STEM careers and ask industry experts questions about science, their occupation, and the career paths they have taken.”

The series opened on 27 May with a discussion on vaccines and the veterinary field led by Dr Phoebe Readford, International Program Veterinary Leader at Australia Centre for Disease Preparedness.

Here’s the complete schedule of future topics and presenters:

  • 3 June: Frog identification with Adam Woods, FrogID Science Communicator and Project Coordinator at Australian Museum
  • 10 June: How to be advocate with Tammy Atkins, Managing Director at It’s on Purpose
  • 17 June: Using models to find animals with Benjamin Wagner, PhD candidate in the School of Ecosystem and Forest Sciences at the University of Melbourne
  • 24 June: Understanding fire behaviour with Jayne Ames, Bushfire Risk Officer at Department of Environment, Land, Water and Planning

Registration is required and can be done on CSU’s official website.

Participants will automatically receive an invitation to a free streaming of the 2040 documentary at the end of the series.

Participating schools will also be granted access to the recorded sessions.
