It is not uncommon for students to submit projects and assignments with mistakes, but one student’s mistake proved to be an unforgettable faux pas after screenshots of it went viral.
A freshman at Ohio University recently made herself and her professor famous after she submitted a paper without removing an inappropriate nickname she gave him.
The student had trouble remembering his name and typed “Professor whats his nuts” in her assignment – but forgot to edit the draft prior to submitting the paper.
Professor John Hendel then received an email from her, where she profusely apologised for getting his name wrong on the paper. He was unfazed and simply replied her, “Thanks, whatever, nbd [no big deal]”.
He only understood why his student apologised after reviewing her paper. He then shared his experience via Twitter on Wednesday (19 September) and even changed his handle to the nickname. His tweet went viral and garnered over 53,700 retweets and 352,200 likes as of Monday.
According to INSIDER, Hendel accepted her apology with no hard feelings. He also shared that the entire incident was especially amusing as the paper was just a two-page essay for an introductory class, saying “the stakes are so low on this paper”.
“Her email to me was so apologetic and so specific. She knew exactly what had happened and how to fix it,” he said. “I just thought the whole thing was really funny. I told her, 'I'm not holding it against you, I'm fine with it.' Because I think it's funny.”
He also told her “the university would likely want me to tell you about professionalism and make sure you proofread your paper before you submit it and all these things.”
The class doesn’t meet for another three weeks but both are on good terms.
“The fact that she [also tweeted about it] kind of told me, 'OK, we're both cool with this. We both think it’s funny. Good,’” he said. “I accepted her apology, no problem. I don't expect it to happen again.”
