Singapore’s Ministry of Education announced today (28 September) that it will scrap the mid-year examinations for primary 3 and 5, as well as secondary 1 and 3 over the next three years.
The move aims to reduce the stress associated with school-based assessments and free up more time and space in schools to strengthen holistic development, self-discovery and engaged learning.
“These changes will provide more opportunities for student-centred teaching and learning approaches,” MOE said. “This lays the groundwork for nurturing life-long learning attitudes and skills.”
MOE will continue to support schools and teachers in familiarising themselves with the changes, and in turn, enable them to give that same support to affected parents and students.
