Singapore’s Ministry of Education is rolling out a new online learning portal to all schools from primary to junior college level by end of May.
The Singapore Student Learning Space (SLS) aims to promote self-directed learning and will cover core subjects including science, mathematics, as well as history and social studies.
Through the portal, students can learn at their own pace, revisit concepts and read up other areas of interest. They can also log in and out at their own convenience – during or after school hours.
The portal also encourages collaborative learning through peer assignment assessments, where student can discuss their answers with others on the platform. Teachers can then give feedback and bridge any learning gaps.
The project was piloted at 62 local primary and secondary schools in August last year and has been progressively rolled out to other schools in phases this year.
MoE told Channel NewsAsia that feedback from teachers and students have been positive so far.
English language secondary teacher Lu Suxin has been using the portal since its pilot phase to teach students how to analyse language and text. She said she has seen improvement in her students’ work.
Another primary school teacher, Veronica Guo, who co-designed a common mother tongue language lesson said the platform has helped keep her students engaged.
However, the portal is not without its limitations.
Secondary school staff developer Noreha Nordin, who co-designed her school’s lessons said there is a lack of integration with essential third-party softwares like Google Docs, which can further encourage real-time collaboration among students.
MoE said it will continue to gather feedback to enhance the portal further.
