All primary schools in Singapore to offer applied learning programs by 2023, said the Ministry of Education (MOE).
MOE will provide more opportunities and support schools as they adopt applied learning methods throughout their curriculum.
All secondary schools and more than 80 primary schools currently offer applied learning programs, which is less than half the total number of primary schools here.
Some secondary schools also offer a range of applied subjects and elective modules which cater to students with different interests and learning abilities.
By 2019, more than 50 schools will offer applied subjects at the O-level. Some of the subjects currently offered in schools here are electronics, computing, drama and sports science.
“To help schools leverage applied learning opportunities effectively, MOE will provide more guidance to teachers in designing meaningful applied learning experiences for students.
“Schools are also encouraged to provide ungraded learning spaces to encourage students to explore and experiment with new ideas,” MOE said in a statement.
Applied learning opportunities will provide students with a more hands-on and experiential learning-based education. This will allow them to situate and apply their knowledge and skills in real-world contexts, enriching students’ overall learning, added MOE.
The ministry will be complementing schools’ applied learning curriculums with Education and Career Guidance programs – this will enable students to discover their interests and make informed decisions as their progress in their education.
