Malaysian teachers arrested for student abuse

Two kindergarten teachers in Malaysia were detained by police following viral videos of them allegedly abusing and hitting several children at a centre.

The centre’s owner reported the case on 11 August after seeing videos of the incidents, which allegedly occurred on 30 July.

The two videos had gone viral on social media and involved four children. According to Utusan Online, there were no signs of injuries on the children.

Both incidents had occurred at the same premises – it was reported that the centre has two branches.

There was also a viral WhatsApp message circulating claiming that one of the teachers in the videos had been serving for over 11 years.

Both teachers are on bail and pending investigation, said the district police chief.

The state’s Welfare Department director said the kindergarten was under the purview of the state Education Department and that the team would be giving counselling sessions to children traumatised by the incidents.
