Teacher suspended, arrested

A North Queensland high school teacher has been arrested for allegedly maintaining an inappropriate relationship with a male student for six months.

The 30-year-old female teacher, who cannot be named for legal reasons, has since been suspended by the school.

She is charged with four counts of procuring a young person for carnal knowledge, and the indecent treatment of a child under the age of 16.

Police also allege that the teacher had indecent dealings with a 15-year-old girl.

The Officer in Charge of the Townsville Child Protection Investigation Unit, Detective Senior Sergeant, Dave Miles, told the Townsville Bulletin.

“Our investigations have identified the alleged sexual relationship between the student and the teacher had been ongoing for about six months,” Sen-Sgt Miles said.

“The indecent treatment charge relates to her alleged conduct with a 15-year-old girl and the exchanging of material between the two of them.

He added that it was not so much the child exploitation material, but rather “discussions and the things they were talking about”.

“Due diligence by the senior staff at the school identified the issue when it first became noticeable and alerted authorities very quickly, which allowed us to respond in a timely manner,” he said.

The woman will appear in court on November 3.
